310 Process
Carter County does not have listed perennial streams, therefore 310 permits are not required. However, the conservation district would like to be made aware of projects that may impact water quality and waterways in the county.
Water Reservations
With legislative and constitutional support for water reservations, Carter County Conservation District applied for and was granted water reservations to be used for irrigation. On December 15, 1994, the Montana Board of Natural Resources and Conservation granted a reservation of 4684 acre-feet and 26.3 cfs of water per year. Water was granted from ground water, Little Beaver Creek, Box Elder Creek, Little Missouri River, and certain tributaries to these streams. These water reservations secure a priority date for future developments. The priority date is established as July 1, 1989. Senior water rights held by land owners are still applicable.
Applications for water reservations are taken by the district who then works with Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) to approve projects.
